This September, Boris headlines Wrecked. Could there be a more perfect match? The longtime Berghain resident is a modern master whose decades of work as both a DJ and producer has boldly pushed the form forward. His contributions to the Ostgut Ton label are frequently spartan exercises in grayscale minimalism, with Boris sculpting a deeply evocative soundfield from a handful of select elements. But as a DJ, his range runs the gamut from full-bore techno to mercurial depth and hands-in-the-air uplift. It’s the result of a life spent attuned to the nuances and particularities of music rather than to spectacle and glitz. It’s no surprise that the same ethos can describe Wrecked, which since its inception has always pushed for a music-first approach. Resident and co-founder Ryan Smith joins Boris in BASEMENT, offering a complimentary approach that pulls from the deepest recesses of his crates.
Alinka headlines STUDIO. A resident at Kyiv’s ∄ and the co-founder of Twirl with Shaun J. Wright, Alinka is a longtime champion of queer dance music from across the spectrum. On last year’s “DGTL” EP, Alinka lays it all out with a batch of trance-y, pumping dancefloor bombs of the highest order. Her sets and sprawling discography are filled with unabashed love letters to the timeless joys of house and the riotous, raunchy sense of liberation that can be accessed only on the dancefloor. Mike Swells steps into the booth for the first time. A fixture of the US underground, Swells has been DJing for nearly thirty years, working tirelessly through generations of dance music. A community organizer par excellence, his contributions to Honcho, Refuge and other key hubs are invaluable. But anyone who knows his work knows the depth of his craft. Swells makes the masterful look simple, blending across genres, era and BPMs with pure musicality and an effortless, seamless flow. Wrecked’s own Ron Like Hell completes the picture. They are the living embodiment of the digger, an artist whose command of tripping, heady groove is unparalleled.
